Attention !
A passport may be necessary depending on the destination chosen! A number of countries require a minimum validity of 6 months after the departure date. Please check the website of FPS Foreign Affairs and contact the embassy competent for your destination.
Good to know
- All Belgians, from birth, can obtain their own passport.
- A Belgian passport is valid for 7 years (5 years for minors).
- A Belgian passport remains valid after moving to another Belgian municipality or abroad.
Passport application procedure
Since 03/09/2012, only biometric passports are issued. To take biometric data (photo and fingerprints, and signature), the applicant must come in person. The registration of biometric data is mandatory for every new application. It is not possible to extend the validity of a passport.
- The applicant must complete the passport application form and return his old passport during his appointment. For children, the passport application form for minors must be signed by both parents and a copy of the identity cards of both parents must be added. Both parents and child must be present for the application. For children younger than 6, the physical presence of the child is not mandatory. You can simply send the complete file by mail to the Embassy and join one (1) identity photo.
- In case of loss, the applicant must also complete the declaration of loss form and add it to his application. Call DOC STOP at the following number +32 2 488 21 23 to block your lost documents and avoid any risk of fraudulent use.
- In case of theft, the applicant must declare the theft at the police station and complete the declaration of theft form and add the declaration to his application. Call DOC STOP at the following number +32 2 488 21 23 to block your lost documents and avoid any risk of fraudulent use.
- Consular services are provided form Monday to Thursday by appointment only.

Timing
The production of the passport takes an average of two weeks. You will receive an automatic email notifying you of the arrival of your passport in the Embassy. You will have 3 months to pick it up. After this period, we will be obliged to cancel and destroy the passport. The cost of a new passport will be at your expense.
Conservation of data
Mandatory 3-month storage
When you apply for a passport, we must store your data for 3 months in our “passport production” database. Doing so enables us to:
- Produce your passport.
- Reproduce a new passport if you notice an administrative or production error on the return of your passport. This means that you will not have to return a 2nd time to provide new data.
Optional 7-year storage
Solely upon your request, we can store your data for 7 years.
This means that in certain well-defined cases we can produce a duplicate of your passport, without you having to return and provide new data at your Embassy:
