Legalisation of documents

As of July 15th, 2025, legalization requests for Iraqi documents must be submitted to TLScontact in Baghdad or Erbil. 

Holders of a Jordanian residence permit may submit their legalization requests for Iraqi documents to TLScontact in Amman.

The legalization process of Iraqi documents takes minimum 6 weeks after submission. 

All legalization requests for Jordanian documents must be submitted to TLScontact in Amman. 

The legalization process of Jordanian documents takes approximately 1 week after submission.

As of 14th September 2020, the Embassy will legalize documents electronically without a sticker affixed to the original document. Documents must still be submitted in hard copy. However, they will be signed electronically and sent by e-mail. With a reference number provided by the embassy, the legalized document can be accessed on this website: legalweb.diplomatie.be


Official documents issued in one country are not always valid in another. Jordanian and Iraqi documents, intended for the Belgian authorities, must always be legalized so that Belgian authorities recognize them with full legal effect.

Legalization certifies the origin of a document. It is an official confirmation of the veracity of the signature, stamp or seal of the civil servant who signed the document.

Please note that documents issued in Arabic must be translated into English or one of the national languages (French/Dutch/German). The Embassy does not legalize originals without the translation or vice-versa.

Documents needed to update your Belgian national registry file (e.g. nationality, marital status, …) must be translated into the language used by the municipality in which the documents will to be submitted or into one the national languages if they will be presented at our consulate.
 

Legalization of Jordanian documents

   

As of February 27, 2025 all legalization requests for Jordanian documents must be submitted to TLScontact.

Legalize the original document at the Jordanian MFA.

Translate the original by a sworn translator.

Legalize the translation by a notary and the Jordanian MFA. Submit the original document and its translation to TLScontact.

Concretely, this means that any request for legalization of a JORDANIAN civil status document (already legalized by the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs) will have to be submitted to TLScontact. TLScontact will take care of the reception and retrieval of the documents, the collection of the service fees (5 EUR per document, destined to TLScontact) as well as the legalization fees (20 EUR per document, destined to the Embassy) and the transmission of the documents to the Embassy.

 The Embassy remains solely responsible for the legalization as such. The legalized documents will be returned to TLScontact who will contact the applicants for collection.

 The fees are payable to TLScontact, at the exchange rate decided by the FPS Foreign Affairs and communicated to TLScontact. Please note that the original document and its translation count as two documents.

No, anyone can bring your document.

Iraqi nationals with residence in Jordan can submit the legalization request for Iraqi documents to TLScontact in Amman.

Legalize the original document and its translation at the Iraqi MFA.

All requests for legalization of Iraqi documents must be accompanied by the following documents: 

  • a copy of the identity card and/or passport of the person concerned 

  • a Copy of Entry 1957 of the person concerned

Legalization of your signature (Private deed)


Under certain conditions, the consular department can legalize your signature. Attention, the document on which the legalization will be affixed must absolutely be signed at the embassy, ​​before the consular agent! You will therefore take care NOT to sign the document in advance.

For legalization of signature, you must make an e-Appointment in advance and submit the following documents:

  • The unsigned document
  • A valid identity document (passport or Identity card)
  • Consular fees

Please note: the legalization authenticates the signature, but in no way confirms the content of the document.
